LANCASHIRE
HERALDRY
We have called this page
'Lancashire Heraldry' because the pictures are from memorials that are to be
found
in and around the Parish Churches in our Northern part of Lancashire.
Below are some of the interesting heraldry we have discovered during our project
work, symbols and arms
are often found on grave stones but it is the memorials inside the Church, Civic
Building and Stately Homes etc
that have been preserved, the heraldry can usually be found on memorial tablets
and in Stained Glass Windows.
Possibly the finest place to discover Heraldry in the UK is the Shire Hall at
Lancaster Castle.
For a Millennium project, our Lancashire Society Heraldry Group completed the
mammoth task of recording
all the heraldry at Lancaster Castle, they then published it as an 100+ page
A4 book in 2000. see below..

All three of these examples were found at St Cuthbert's Church
Over Kellet, they are carved memorials from around 1700.
The first is for JOHN WILSON of Hall Garth born 1655
died 1707.
The middle one is for HENRY WILSON Esq. died 1772 aged
70
The right hand caved memorial with a similar coat of arms is for:
THOMAS WILSON of Over Kellet who was born 1650 and died 1702.
The mullet on the body of the wolf has been replaced with a
crescent.
Thomas was a benefactor to the people of Kellet and Capernwray and
endowed the free school in Over Kellet that thrives today as:
WILSON'S Endowed C. E School |
