A visit to Torrisholme cemetery
theses days is a very rewarding experience,
although in terms of
history it's not old; opened in 1906 it has been the main place of
burial of the dead of Morecambe since the Municipal cemetery in
Poulton ran out of space.
Burials today are almost daily and burials are also conducted at the
following municipal cemeteries;
Hale Carr (Heysham), Slyne, Skerton,
Scotforth, Halton and Carnforth.
The Crematorium at Crosshill handles most of the bereavements in the
Lancaster & Morecambe area,
the book of remembrance and the numerous
garden inscriptions (45 acres)
are well worth exploring for any
lost relatives in the last 45 years.
This year the Lancaster City Council has created a 'Heritage
Walk' through Torrisholme cemetery.
They have produced a very good guide to help visitors appreciate and
respect the burial grounds,
To help keep public awareness and understanding a 'Friends of
Torrisholme Cemetery' has been created.
if you think you could help with the conservation and development at
Torrisholme
Contact: Bill Jackson on 01524 417035
or come along to the Chapel at 10.00am on the first Sunday of each
month
and meet members of the 'Friends'

Help
from the Lancaster & Morecambe Branch
Branch members have transcribed and indexed
burial records
and memorials
for the Municipal Cemeteries at:
Torrisholme, (Westgate Road)
Skerton (Halton Road)
Scotforth
Cemetery
Carnforth
Cemetery
Halton Cemetery
Lancaster Quernmore Road
The burial records show a lot more detail than the
monumental
inscription,
They show the people buried without any memorial,
in
some cases they show who bought the plot, the date,
the location and what the cost was.
Also ages, relationships and addresses are shown.
Most of this data is freely available to our members
and
free indexes
are gradually being made available
on this website to
help your research.
